41, sick and not working First off i would like to say that queer to me has nothing to do with any sexual preferences. Those have enough labels as is….. Queer to me means exactly that: queer… against the norm, beeing different, stretching borders, questioning the rules, define your own self without fitting in. Be who you wanna be without trying to fullfill the expectations of others and stand up for what you believe in. oh hell yeah im queer :)

Queer to me is something where people take themselves too seriously, are too ready to judge by how someone looks and are far too cliquey for a group of people who have been on the outside for so long. However pretty girls make my day a little bit happier, especially in the sun, especially on a bike.

To be honest, queer has always meant ‘odd’ and  ’strange’ to me and has never had any link to being homosexual.

It has no nasty connotations, it just means something that is slightly unusual.

Me, Musician, 21 So I guess I should explain why this space exists. This question was thrown at me when my band B.O.Y were interviewed by a ‘queer’ magazine.Editor : So, do you understand yourselves as a queer band? or as a band who is concerned with queer music? Or as queer people who make queer music?Me : What?Editor : We primarily just want to know wether you’re queers/lesbians at all? Just to get a picture i.e “the queer band B.O.Y sounds like..”

This interview angered me so much. It just made me angry because it was hinting that being queer was everything, that somehow if someone saw
” The queerband B.O.Y…”
They would know EXACTLY what we sounded like, looked like, were. Like it would describe everything about us.

When it doesnt.
Does it?

Student, 19. For me, being queer is being something that no-one expects. It’s breaking free from comformity and from stereotypes, and refusing to be scared. It’s about finding peace within yourself, and through that, finding peace with other people, and losing the need to judge anyone for their differences. Queer can be femininity. Queer is beautiful.

Queer is often left in the dark but when discovered it can lead to something amazing.

21, Hardware EngineerFor me, Queer is something that relates directly to myself and has done since childhood. Therefore, if you were to ask me to provide an image of what it means to me, I feel there’s no better image than that of something that has become part of my own private lifestyle.

Student Activist / 22Queer to me is everything. It’s about challenging the ‘norm’. it’s who I am, who I want to be. It’s about joining together for our future and to change the future for the next generation.

 I am a student!
I have used this because its wrong in a funnily good way, it makes me laugh, when I hear people using that word or homophobic language openly in public, I used to emotionally and mentally run from it but now I know I can face up to it and laugh homophobia in the face knowing that I’m not scared. I like this photo because when I first saw it my first reaction was “is that what I’m going to turn into?!” and to this day it still makes me laugh no matter how wrong it first sounded when I read it?

Student 20.

Queer to me is a word my Dad word use to describe a Gay Man.
It would be said with crunched up eyes and downward turning smile. It wasn’t a term of triumph or success, more a word to describe the litter in the gutter.

This was my first association with the word as long as i can remember… So to me it was Queer = not quite right.

Queer is another way to say GAY or Homosexual, I suppose if I say to someone, ‘Oh BTW I am Queer,’ and their reaction isn’t quite what I wanted I’d be like “No no no no  I meant I’d like a bear!’ or ‘No i said I’ve had a good year’

However now I have grown to know that homosexuality isn’t something of dirt and disgust, although i still am not fully comfortably with it, yes it’s weird (because it’s new/different to what I’m so used to ) but its also I have never felt so comfortable around some queers than ever in my life and that is something i never ever thought I would say.

Although I hate LABELS, because of stereotypes. I know that its just a way to try and understand people, business, creation. It’s only there because I can’t see into your mind and what you are thinking so you have to communicate that to me in a way of words, label, actions.

Queer is a word to describe someone thats different in the sense they are attract to the same sex. Some people would say thats not normal, but what is normal anyways?
Normal literally is nothing, it changes everywhere you go, culture, society, community- normal is different everywhere and it changes with time.  Whats normal this year won’t be next, in fashion, music, travel, money blah blah.
Are you Queer, Are you Normal??

Well normals pretty shit to be fair!
